TIPS FOR WEST VIRGINIA MOTORCYCLE RIDES
The summers are hot in WV, but there will be less heat and humidity if riding in the mountains because the higher elevations have a dramatic effect on the climate. In the winter, snow and ice will shut down any rides in the mountains. The eastern part of the state tends to be warmer, so consider breathable riding gear if you’re planning a ride in that region. WV is one of the rainiest states in the nation, so be sure to pack rain gear.

GEORGE WASHINGTON HIGHWAY
ROUTE: US-50
DISTANCE: 36 miles
TIME: 1 hour
The George Washington Hwy is a great West Virginia motorcycle ride in the eastern part of the state. There’s and abundance of twisting curves, switchbacks and several highly technical. East of Cheat River, ride up an exciting 1200 feet in 3 miles on the Big Hill. Start this route in Grafton and head east for several highly technical sections, lots of scenery and generally light traffic. The views are especially terrific in the autumn when the foliage is at its peak. Another nice thing about this ride is you are close to some of the best motorcycle roads in the country – Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

ROUTE 250
ROUTE: US-250
DISTANCE: 31 miles
TIME: 30 mins
Pickup US-250 in Huttonsville and enjoy this remarkable West Virginia motorcycle road through the deep forest of Monongahela National Forest. This road takes you over two large mountains with panoramic views of valleys and through small historic towns. Motorcyclists will also ride through beautiful farm land, thick forest and nearby trickling streams in the Monongahela National Forest. US-250 provides some very technically challenging switchbacks, tight corners and elevation changes. This ride won’t disappoint. In fact, it’s considered by many to be the best motorcycle ride in West Virginia!

SENECA TRAIL
ROUTE: US-219
DISTANCE: 197 miles
TIME: 4.5 hours
The Seneca Trail is a gorgeous WV motorcycle road that covers much of the state and runs through the Allegheny Mountain range and the Monongahela National Forest. This 200 mile route will take you past some of the wildest and most scenic parts of the state. The pavement quality is great. There are plenty of twisties, and there’s many other fantastic roads that branch off every part of this W Virginia motorcycle ride, including Route 61 in Virginia. Optionally try the fun little detour around Marlington, WV on Highland Scenic Highway. There’s also many other State Parks around this route to explore curvy roads as well.

US-33
ROUTE: US-33
DISTANCE: 78 miles
TIME: 2 hours
For an absolutely thrilling ride on the west side of the Appalachian mountains, we suggest this well maintained route from Elkens to the WV border. You’ll be passing through two national forests – the George Washington and the Monongahela – on US-33. There are some sharp turns and few straight-aways with some great vistas of the Shenandoah Valley. Route 33 also provides exquisite twists and turns, drops and climbs as you motorcycle along the gorgeous WV scenery. Continue on to Seneca Rocks with some of the most stunning rock formations east of the the Rockies, and enjoy one of the best, curvy motorcycle roads in W Virginia!

DISTANCE: 102 miles
TIME: 2.5 hours
If you’re looking for a technical, sporty ride, look no further than this great motorcycle route on WV-39! This road has a lot to offer as far as twists and turns go. There’s a nice balance of sweepers, tight turns as well as elevation changes as you traverse through the Monongahela and George Washington forests. Motorcycle riders will also have some open spaces which provide opportunities for passing if needed. The eastern section will offer more mountain views, as the western portion will be more dense forest riding. This route will take you over 100 miles from the junction of US-60 in Gauley Bridge to Minnehaha Springs. But Route 39 continues to be a fantastic motorcycle ride past the Virginia state line.

MIDLAND TRAIL
ROUTE: US-60
DISTANCE: 80 miles
TIME: 2 hours
The Midland Trail is an awesome motorcycle road in the Appalachian region. This ride can be started just off our above-mentioned WV-39 route, where you’ll carve alongside the Kanawha River. There’s a lot of scenic diversity on the Midland Trail motorcycle ride, including grassy farmland, mountain views and waterfalls to stop and check out along the way. Continue east to White Sulphur Springs, WV. There are many scenic overlooks along this part of US-60, including places to stop and enjoy the views of the river. Look out for bits of gravel on the road as well as a few rough sections. On the plus side, much of this road runs along Highway 64, so there is not a lot of traffic to contend with along US-60.

HIGHLAND SCENIC HIGHWAY
ROUTE: WV-150
DISTANCE: 38 miles
TIME: 1 hour
Just off of the above-mentioned Seneca Trail motorcycle route, is this detour just north of Hillsboro, WV. The Highland Scenic Highway offers motorcyclists a beautiful, smooth route. It’s 38 miles of riding high on the mountains of Pocahontas County. WV-150 is more of a relaxed ride, as there are not any technical, tight turns. It’s mainly sweepers with some elevation changes, all with very minimal traffic. The Highland Scenic Highway is a well-maintained, lovely road high above the neighboring valleys, and a great motorcycle road to take in the overlooks.
