TIPS FOR OKLAHOMA MOTORCYCLE RIDES

If you’re looking for places to ride motorcycles in Oklahoma, keep in mind that thanks to it’s hot summers and mild winters, you can ride here every month of the year. In summer, expect temps to get into the 90’s. Ride with mesh-style jackets or pants, or other types of hot weather riding gear. Insulative jackets and pants are best for any winter riding in OK.

IS THERE A HELMET LAW IN OKLAHOMA?

TALIMENA NATIONAL SCENIC BYWAY

ROUTE: OK-1
DISTANCE: 35 miles
TIME: 1 hour


The Talimena National Scenic Byway takes you through the Ouachita National Forest. For 54 miles along OK-1, this motorcycle ride in Oklahoma dips and swirls along a ridge line in eastern Oklahoma, and is the highest point in elevation between the Appalachians and the Rockies. There’s 22 viewing vistas, and the ride offers continuous curves while the route twists around slopes and mountain tops.

WICHITA MOUNTAIN WILDLIFE REFUGE

ROUTE: OK-49
DISTANCE: 30 miles
TIME: 45 mins


This scenic motorcycle road in Oklahoma takes you through Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge southwest of Oklahoma City. There’s a few nice curves to work, but mostly some wide open vast stretches of Oklahoma country scenery. The road is nicely paved and riders will find very little traffic. Running alongside the Wichita Mountains, the scenic byway includes scenery of rocky lowlands, grass prairies, and timberland, all of which are especially beautiful in full bloom come summer and with the fall foliage. The refuge provides a habitat for large native grazing animals such as bison, elk, and white-tailed deer, so there are plenty of opportunities to see wildlife on this route. Just watch out for those bison!

INDIAN HIGHWAY

ROUTE: US-271, Indian Hwy, Hwy 144
DISTANCE: 39 miles
TIME: 1 hour


The Indian Highway is a great Oklahoma motorcycle ride with hardly any traffic, so you can go at your own pace. About as scenic a ride as you can find in all of Oklahoma. Pick up this route from Talihina. There are amazing curves and elevation changes. Further south is more great riding into Bethel along Route 144. There are a lot of nice curves and hills with nice views of tall trees and distant valleys and mountains.

LAKE STANLEY DRAPER LOOP

ROUTE: Stanley Draper Rd
DISTANCE: 13 miles
TIME: 30 mins


For a short, easy ride around Lake Stanley Draper, check out this Oklahoma motorcycle route just off of Highway 240. The scenery is great, as the lake is always next to you, as well as lots of trees. You’ll cross the dam on the south end of the lake. This is an especially great Oklahoma motorcycle ride for beginners, as this loop can be used for excellent training for anybody who wants to work on gaining good cornering habits. There are numerous roads marked as Points where you can venture down to see the lake, some of which have great curves as well.

ROUTE 259

ROUTE: US-259
DISTANCE: 62 miles
TIME: 1 hour


OK Route 259 is a scenic motorcycle ride in Oklahoma that can be accessed just off the above mentioned Talimena Scenic Drive. Highway 259 is full of fast sweepers as you climb into the Ouachita Mountains, and stays great into Broken Bow, OK. There are many scenic lakes to ride around as well as many historic sites on this route, making this one of the best motorcycle roads in Oklahoma. As an off-shoot, take Route 144 to Honobia. OK for another fun, hilly motorcycle road.
